In 2015 we have adopted a more aggressive goal of achieving site net zero energy (NZE) by the end of the year.

Next Steps for Energy

To implement our energy goals, we will take the following next steps:

  • Investigate and implement any remaining energy efficiency measures.
  • Expand our existing 5 kW roof and awning mounted solar array by 20-25 kW.
  • Explore the option of converting our office to direct current (DC) power.
  • Install a community electric vehicle charging station on-site.
  • Investigate more efficient heating and cooling systems.

Tracking Our Sustainability Performance

Overall, Brendle Group's energy use in 2015 is 19 percent less than our 2011 baseline. This is considerably ahead of our initial goal of reducing energy use by 10 percent by 2016 and offers the opportunity to set a new goal.

In 2016 we plan to use the update of our sustainability management system to determine a pragmatic path to net zero energy (NZE) by 2020. This will need to account for the design constraints of our current property and use creativity to determine how to install additional renewable energy resources on-site. We will also continue to investigate technologies to optimize our high-performance, energy-efficient building.

The breakdown of 2015 consumption is outlined below:

Brendle Group’s electricity use increased from 10,916 kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2014 to 12,258 kWh in 2015. Natural gas use decreased from 832 therms in 2014 to 650 therms in 2015. Our solar photovoltaic (PV) system generated 28 percent of this electricity consumption.

Natural gas per employee as well as total electricity per employee decreased compared to 2014 with the net addition of four Brendle Group employees during that time. Overall, our total energy consumed per square foot decreased to 23 kBtu per square foot compared to the 2011 baseline of 28 kBtu per square foot.
